A History of The Woodlands |

| THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS. The Woodlands is a community west of Interstate Highway 45 and 18 miles from Bush Intercontinental Airport and 30 miles north from downtown Houston. In 1972 the Mitchell Energy and Development Corporation, as a response to the growth of nearby Houston began to build on 28,000 acres, a planned community called The Woodlands. The first homes were ready for purchase in 1974, and by 1980 the community had a population of 11, 197, six schools, six parks, five churches and a public library. By 1981, about 160 companies had opened their offices there. |

Now home to more than 85,000 people and 1,300 businesses, The Woodlands is known for its recreation and culture, acclaimed schools that offer life long learning and world-class medical facilities.
Town center and The Woodlands Waterway have become a regional destination, with more shopping, dinning and entertainment, pedestrian-friendly gathering places and urban residences. Town Green Park, the 100th park in The Woodlands, is a four-acre central gathering place for special events and outdoor festivals has just opened. Construction is underway for Waterway Square, a one-acre public plaza with signature fountains and water features that is planned to open in early 2008. Also in development is East Shore, the 260-acre"Garden District” of Town Center, where custom and urban residences in classic architectural styles blend with garden parks and lakeside amenities.
